It was with excitement that listeners filled the auditorium at Vancouver Community College this Saturday evening, their smiles brimming in anticipation of a performance by the award-winning Nibun Chorus, an Indigenous youth choir celebrated for blending traditional songs with contemporary choral arrangements.

As the lights dimmed and the first notes echoed through the hall, the audience was transported into a world of story and spirit. Each song carried a message—from celebrating the return of a warrior, to welcoming new guests to their village, to remembering the gentleness of a mother’s eyes.

Over the course of the program, Nibun Chorus performed many languages: Taiwanese, Mandarin Chinese, English, and several Taiwanese Indigenous languages, including those of the Amis and Bunun peoples. The intricate harmonies and rhythmic layers reflected the richness and diversity of Taiwan’s Indigenous musical traditions, each piece a testament to heritage and cultural pride.

Hailing from Kaohsiung, Taiwan, nestled in the island’s high mountains, the Nibun Chorus is composed of 70 talented young singers. For this Canadian tour, 35 singers graced the Vancouver stage, delivering a performance that was both mesmerizing and evocative, leaving the audience visibly moved.

Their journey doesn’t end here—the Nibun Chorus will next perform in Edmonton, Alberta, continuing to share their powerful voices and stories across Canada, building bridges through the universal language of song.

We are deeply honored to host Nibun Chorus and organize this unforgettable concert. Here’s to another opportunity in the near future—perhaps in an even larger auditorium—to share their incredible music with an even wider audience.

We are also grateful to Elders and Indigenous Knowledge Keepers Leslie George, Sam George, and Kalup George for opening our event in a good way—with warmth, wisdom, and song.

Many thanks as well to our partners and sponsors:
